Convention Highlights

Keynote Speaker

We are pleased to welcome Tom Brokaw as our opening keynote speaker for the AKFCF 2009 convention!

From 1983 to 2004, Mr. Brokaw was the anchor and managing editor of "NBC Nightly News." He remains at NBC, where he continues to report and provide expertise as well as produce documentaries. He has won numerous awards, including two Peabody awards and several Emmy, Overseas Press Club and National Headliner awards. He has covered every presidential election since 1968 and was NBC's White House correspondent during Watergate. He is also the author of several best-selling books, including The Greatest Generation.

Mr. Brokaw began his journalism career in 1962 at KMTV in Omaha, Nebraska. He anchored the late evening news on Atlanta's WSB-TV in 1965 before joining KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. He was hired by NBC News in 1966 and from 1976 to 1981 he anchored the "Today" program. He is based in New York, NY.

Closing Keynote Speaker

Michael Abrashoff, former Commander of the Guided Missile Destroyer USS Benfold, has spent many years developing the management techniques he used during his tenure in the Navy.  His leadership message advises the business community how to empower their people while increasing profits and cutting costs.  As one of the youngest commanding officers in the Navy, Mike took command of the worst performing ship in the fleet.  He didn’t have the option to hire, fire or promote personnel. Leading unprecedented turnaround practices, Mike made the ship the Navy’s top performer by changing the culture – not the crew.  His motivational insights are based on the principle that “You need to recruit your people every day even though you already have them on board.”  The AKFCF is proud to welcome Mike Abrashoff to the convention.

The Capitol Steps

Since 1981 the Capitol Steps have been digging into the headlines of the day and creating song parodies and skits which convey a special brand of satirical humor. It’s OK – even desirable – to laugh. You’ll be in good company…over the years Capitol Steps has performed for five U.S. Presidents!  Be sure to stay for their performance, happening right before lunch during general session.

Workshops

Many of you have already heard Bruce Wilkinson at your regional meetings.  Bruce's programs reinforce information with both enthusiasm and humor, but it is humor with a purpose!  His unique style, passion and authenticity create “rememberability” within the audience.  His mission is to help organization’s translate their corporate culture into a workplace climate that inspires excellence.  Bruce's topic for his convention workshop is "Leadership Culture Club"  and will focus on Local Store Culture and Leadership.

Bruce's workshop is one of five you will have an opportunity to choose from on Wednesday.  Larry Light's is another.

Larry Light has advised marketers in packaged goods, technology, services, automotive, corporate and business-to-business, as well as not-for-profit organizations. In 2002, he was asked to join McDonald’s as the Global Chief Marketing Officer to help lead the McDonald’s turnaround. In 2004, BrandWeek selected him as one the top ten marketers of the year, and McDonald’s won the prestigious “Marketer of the Year” award.  Advertising Age credits Larry with reigniting the restaurant chain’s sales and overhauling its marketing plan – which included the “i'm lovin' it” strategy and efforts to resonate with the youth market.”  Larry will be speaking on "Profit Boosters" - In-Store Profit Building.

Other workshops at the convention include ...

Commodities 101:  Pete Suerken, VP of Centralized Purchasing and Commodity Risk Management at UFPC will lead this timely and informative workshop.  Pete, along with several UFPC Commodity experts will bring KFC to the spotlight discussing the commodity markets and their impact on restaurant operators.

Andrew Selden's Annual Legal Update

KFC Corporation's workshop - "My Team of the Future @ KFC Technology is moving at Warp Speed . . . and so can you and your business. Our solutions for attracting, engaging and training are out of this world. Come learn today how to build your KFC team of tomorrow!

Final Night Gala

The AKFCF is proud to welcome BILL COSBY as our final night entertainer this year!

Over the past century, few entertainers have achieved the legendary status of William H. Cosby Jr. His successes span five decades and virtually all media, remarkable accomplishments for a kid who emerged from humble beginnings in a Philly project.

In the 1960s, his stand-up act was a coast-to-coast sensation, spawning a string of hilarious, best-selling comedy albums, which went on to win eight Gold Records, five Platinum records and five Grammy Awards. His role on TV's "I Spy" made him the first African-American to co-star in a dramatic series, breaking television's racial barrier and winning three Emmy Awards. In the 1980s, he again rocked the television world with the The Cosby Show, a gentle, whimsical and hugely successful series that single-handedly revived the family sitcom.

With hit movies like "Uptown Saturday Night" and best-selling books like Fatherhood, Bill Cosby is quite simply a national treasure with the unique ability to touch people's hearts.

We are pleased and excited that Bill Cosby has accepted our invitation to perform for you ... you won't want to miss it!

During dinner and after Cosby's performance, Doc Scantlin and His Imperial Palms Orchestra will entertain and stay around for dancing after Cosby's performance.  Scantlin's music keeps the 1920's, 30's and 40's alive, while also appealing to a large audience with their variety.

Evening attire is Black Tie Optional.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS/PAC EVENT

SBHM house photoAre you a "political animal"?  If so, you won't want to miss Wednesday evening's event on Capitol Hill.  Busses will depart the Gaylord at 3:30 pm.  On arrival, AKFCF franchisees will be able to meet certain Senators and Congressmen and hear presentations that will be pertinent to franchise and small business interests.  Afterwards, everyone will walk to the Sewall-Belmont House for the PAC fundraising party, which not only will be a fun time, but also another opportunity for you to visit with some of the nation's top leaders.

The Sewall-Belmont House and Museum, on Capitol Hill, explores the evolving role of women and their contributions to society through the continuing, and often untold, story of women's pursuit for equality.  Named in the first Save America's Treasures legislation, it is the only museum in the nation's capital dedicated to preserving and showcasing a crucial piece of our history—the fight for the American woman's right to vote. This struggle is documented through one of the most significant collections in the country focused on the suffrage and equal rights movements.  This venue is a wonderful place to hold the PAC fundraiser!

Following the fundraiser will be Candlelight Tours of the Capitol and busses will return to the hotel at 9:00 pm.  The cost of the event is $125 per person.  You can register on-line at the same time you register for convention - don't delay because space is limited to the first 200 franchisee attendees who sign up!  The last day to register is January 21st!

FUN STUFF!

Because the convention is being held so close to Washington, DC, the AKFCF Convention Committee wanted to give everyone ample time and opportunity to see the sites in our nation's capital.  Free transportation will be available from the hotel to downtown DC and back on Wednesday from 11:00 am to 5:30 pm.  Optional tours have been planned - click here to get more information and to sign up!  The deadline for registering for the tours is January 30th.  If there are not enough people registered, the tours will be cancelled.
